Season of Celebration…and DECEPTION

Parties, food, gifts, bonuses…everyone is excited for the merry making and celebration this season.  And as much as we all are, we can be lost in the “hula-balu” of Christmas and get trapped into the DANGERS we face during DECEMBER

DANGER #1: Religiosity.  When we feel like we’re doing certain religious practices &  traditions because of our faith, well, things can just be skin deep. Case in point, we try to complete services-masses in the wee hours of the morning just so our wishes or “prayers” will come true.  Worse, we come to them because of the food! We can totally miss out the point.

DANGER #2: Commercialism. This time of the year is supposed to be about Jesus.  The most important Person who gave the greatest gift we can ever receive.  But somehow, with all the marketing going around, it is becoming about the best bazaar, good bargains, best food buys, Santa (who I believe if were alive today, probably wouldn’t want the attention we’re giving and stealing away from Christ), his reindeer of course and so many more.

DANGER #3: Self Centeredness. Try to check out the top 5 Christmas songs (there are many sites offering the survey) In the site I got into, it was Jingle Bell Rock, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Chipmunk Song, White Christmas.  None of the lyrics were about Jesus, and unfortunately, it was focused on how we feel, what we can get, how happy we can be, how sad we can become…it’s all about I, me and myself.

What now? Of course we celebrate, we give gifts, we give thanks and enjoy! But let’s not give-in to the DECEPTION this season. Always remember WHAT we are celebrating and WHO we are celebrating.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
